VIZZ Presbyopia Drops: What Patients in Camas Need to Know

A new, FDA-approved eye drop is now available to help improve near vision caused by presbyopia — a common, age-related change in your eyes. At Dr. Lewis Eye Care, we’re pleased to offer VIZZ as a treatment option for patients over 40 who struggle with blurry near vision.

If you’re exploring alternatives to reading glasses, here’s what you need to know about VIZZ and how it may fit into your vision care.

What Is VIZZ?

VIZZ is an eye drop that contains aceclidine ophthalmic solution 1.44%, designed for adults experiencing presbyopia, the age-related loss of near vision. It was FDA-approved on July 31, 2025, and is available by prescription only.

What Does VIZZ Treat?

Presbyopia occurs when the eye’s lens becomes less flexible with age, making it harder to focus on nearby objects. VIZZ helps improve near vision for everyday activities such as:

  • Reading books or labels
  • Using smartphones or tablets
  • Viewing menus and fine print

How Is VIZZ Different From Other Presbyopia Drops?

Compared to previously available drops like Vuity or Qlosi, VIZZ offers key differences:

  • Uses aceclidine, not pilocarpine
  • Once-daily dosing
  • In clinical trials (GEMINI-1), VIZZ showed a higher proportion of patients achieving ≥3-line near vision gains at 3 hours versus control than pilocarpine 1.25%

Will I Still Need Reading Glasses?

VIZZ improves near vision, but many patients may still need reading glasses in:

  • Low light conditions
  • When reading very small print

How Does VIZZ Work?

VIZZ works by reducing the size of the pupil, creating a pinhole effect that sharpens near vision clarity.

Will VIZZ Affect My Distance Vision?

The impact on distance vision is expected to be minimal. However, patients should use caution when night driving or performing visually demanding tasks in dim lighting.

How Soon Does It Start Working and How Long Does It Last?

  • Begins working in as little as 30 minutes
  • Lasts up to 10 hours
  • Used once daily

Is VIZZ Covered by Insurance?

No. VIZZ is currently a cash-pay treatment.

  • Cost: Approximately $79 for a one-month supply
  • Each pack contains 25 single-use vials (0.4 ml each)

How Do I Store VIZZ?

  • Keep refrigerated until you begin using it
  • Once removed, vials can be stored at room temperature for up to 30 days
  • Discard the vial after each use

Can I Use VIZZ If I Wear Contact Lenses?

Yes. Many patients continue wearing their distance contact lenses and use VIZZ to improve near vision. Be sure to:

  • Remove contacts before using VIZZ
  • Wait 10 minutes before reinserting lenses

Can I Use VIZZ After Cataract Surgery?

Yes, but near vision benefits may be limited, particularly in patients over age 60. Most post-cataract patients will still need reading glasses, even when using VIZZ.

Can I Use VIZZ After LASIK?

Yes. Patients who have had LASIK may benefit from VIZZ depending on their age and the severity of their presbyopia.

Who Should Be Cautious About Using VIZZ?

VIZZ may not be suitable for patients with:

  • A history of retinal disease
  • A history of iritis (eye inflammation)
  • Jobs or hobbies that involve significant night driving

VIZZ is a pupil-selective miotic with minimal ciliary stimulation, reducing the risk of retinal issues. Clinical trials did not report any cases of retinal tears or detachment.

What Are the Side Effects of VIZZ?

Most side effects are mild and temporary. The most commonly reported include:

  • Eye drop site irritation (20%)
  • Dim vision (16%)
  • Headache (13%)
  • Mild redness (8%), which usually resolved within 30 minutes

What Is a VIZZ Evaluation?

A VIZZ evaluation at Dr. Lewis Eye Care involves a full eye exam to determine if you’re a good candidate. We’ll:

  • Review your prescription
  • Check pupil size and eye health
  • Assess retina and ocular surface
  • Discuss your vision goals, work needs, and lifestyle

This allows us to personalize the recommendation and ensure VIZZ aligns with your needs.
